Cold Passing

Through naked snows I pass at speed,
Not pausing, though the trees I heed.
They shake their branches, stretch and push,
But onward I must press with need.

The ice bound lake that once was lush,
A path I weave and dare to brush:
Its name I cannot bare to speak,
For if I fail, all life will hush.

Ahead I spot the snowy peak,
Where fires leap and gases reek.
For me I hope there waits no pyre,
In this dread place that none dare seek.

At last I crawl and grasp the spire,
Then open my hand, look down with ire
And cast the thing into the fire,
And cast the thing into the fire.

The Unseen

The world fled on, its silent ellipse
Inscribing great arcs in the empty night.
Others pass and take no heed,
Theirs a colder and more bitter business.
Meanwhile kingdoms rise, send out their empty explorers
And pass away into dust.
A single watcher may observe some years hence,
But that ripple will be a long time in coming.

The quiet prow presses onward,
Cutting through the solar wind
That casts the eerie glow of the North;
An invisible bowsprit on a ship of silence.

Time’s Arrow

Merciless, time watches over our abject forms,
And steals lovely night with break of day.
It tempts with burned images that swim in brief ecstasy and are lost,
Our memory a shoddy palimpsest of battling desires and warring ideas.
The stacked moments of a brief universe stretch out for us to perceive,
And yet, for all of our trials and troubles,
We would not bare it to be any other way.

Phil Corbluth’s New Website Now Online! the central repository for all things Phil Corbluth is now online.

There you can browse my artwork and scribblings, plus my foray into games development using Unity 3D and the joys of C# scripting. I’m a bit of a bookworm so there’s a section devoted to books, reviews, and anything I happen to be reading.

There are also links to my other two blogs: The Big Questions and Newtonian Light.

The site is currently under development and a work in progress – thanks for your patience as changes may come thick and fast! Enjoy.

Planet of the Dead

Let me show you a parallel Earth, where the shadows shine,
And we’ll walk together beneath a diamond sun.
We’ll cross a boiling ocean, to reach another shore,
Where a hanging city waits, waits in cooling clouds.
We’ll dash through empty streets that once were paved with gold,
Where a crowd stood laughing, laughing at the cold.

Let me show you a parallel Earth, where the darkness dawns,
And we’ll walk together beneath a chemical sky.
We’ll cross a swirling desert, to reach another door,
Where a sunken city waits, waits in shifting sands.
We’ll dash through empty caverns, where trinkets once were sold,
Where a crowd stood laughing, laughing at the cold.
Where a crowd stood laughing, laughing once of old.

The hopeless spaces between atoms,
That hold everything
Together like a friend who
Promises nothing.

Are you there? There you are.
Let me see your face.
Everywhere and nowhere
Are boundless curves of space.

The Measure of Man

Take a walk through infinite space,
And make the measure of a man.
Without permission given a face,
Awaking in some random place.
Is there any kind of plan?

For there’s a life to live in haste,
Climbing up a burning rope;
Time you can’t afford to waste,
Forgetting those things you long to taste.
Decide to live and love with hope.

Take a walk with random friends
Up mountains topped with ice and snow,
Through golden woods and a path that bends;
Speak softly of what begins and ends.
Take heed the things you wish to know.

For there’s no reason to be afraid
Of truths in time both ancient and vast.
The world was not for all of us made,
And I glanced at you and finally said:
Make your plans and make them last.
